Owura Sarkodieh

KNOW THE CANDIDATE

Owura-Kwaku Sarkodieh was born in Ghana where he had his elementary education. He moved to the United States to pursue his college degrees at the University of Massachusetts Lowell. Owura holds a Juris Doctorate from the Massachusetts School of Law at Andover. Owura has been a resident of Worcester since the year 2000 and has championed causes for children and minorities within the community. As a father whose children all attend the Worcester Public Schools, Owura is passionate about quality education; one that gives parents a choice and a voice in what is being taught in the classrooms. With his academic education in legal and criminal justice, Owura would like to see our streets safe and clean from drugs and crime. As a regular citizen, Owura will provide a welcoming channel to city hall. Owura will be a champion of reasonable development, cooperation and preserving the cultural heritage of Worcester. Seeing that Worcester has been run by the same faces for over a decade, Owura wants to be the new bridge to the next generation.

ISSUES

EDUCATION

As someone who has gone through higher education and served as a substitute teacher in Worcester Public Schools, I’ve seen both the promise in our students and the gaps holding them back. Addressing Worcester’s declining education standards requires bold, community-driven steps:

SAFER STREETS

Public safety is one of the most basic responsibilities of city leadership. But I believe true safety comes from more than just policing—it comes from trust, prevention, and strong communities.

MAKING WORCESTER GREEN

Worcester has the chance to be a statewide leader in green energy—but only if we act boldly now. My plan is about saving residents money, cutting emissions, and building a sustainable local economy:

LAW ENFORCEMENT AND NEIGHBORHOOD ACQUAINTANCE PROGRAMS

I believe public safety works best when law enforcement and residents know and trust each other. That’s why I’ll focus on strengthening community policing—making sure officers are assigned to neighborhoods long enough to build real relationships with the people they serve. When neighbors know the officers by name, it builds trust and makes crime prevention more effective.

SMALL-SCALE BUSINESSES

As a small-scale businessman myself, I know firsthand the challenges Worcester’s entrepreneurs face—rising rents, limited access to capital, and red tape that slows down growth. My plan is to make Worcester a city where small businesses can thrive, not just survive.

YOUTH EMPOWERMENT

As a father of three teenagers, I know that Worcester’s young people need more than just classrooms—they need opportunities, guidance, and hope. My plan for youth empowerment focuses on three key areas:

MUSIC AND THE ARTS

Worcester’s young people have incredible talent, but too often they lack the resources and platforms to develop it. Music and the arts aren’t just hobbies—they’re tools for empowerment, healing, and even career opportunities. My plan would focus on:

CULTURAL PRESERVATION

Worcester’s cultural identity is one of its greatest strengths—shaped by generations of immigrants, artists, faith communities, and grassroots traditions. Preserving it means making sure the city grows without losing its soul. Here’s how I would approach it:

DECONGESTION

Traffic congestion around Kelley Square and the I-290 ramps is one of Worcester’s most pressing headaches. To fix it, I’d focus on smart, practical solutions instead of quick patches:

WORCESTER’S AGING POPULATION

Worcester’s aging population is one of our greatest assets—our seniors built this city, and they deserve to age with dignity, safety, and opportunity. My plan would focus on care, connection, and community:

IMMIGRATION CHALLENGES

Immigration is central to Worcester’s story—our city has always grown stronger because of the people who chose to make it home. But I also know many immigrant families face real challenges: housing, language barriers, jobs, and navigating city services. My approach would be to make Worcester a welcoming city where immigrants can thrive, not just survive:

IMMIGRATION RAIDS

I would protect residents’ civil rights, limit local law-enforcement cooperation with federal immigration enforcement except when required by law, and build city services so immigrant families know their rights and can get legal help quickly.

ISSUES

EDUCATION

Owura is committed to working with parents to have a reasonable say in the curriculum taught in the Worcester Public Schools. The relationship between Parents and teachers will be strengthened. My experience working as a a substitute teacher in the Worcester Public Schools has made me recognize the disparity within the school system. I saw schools that barely had teachers, and sometimes classed had to be combined due to no teaching staff, lack of adequate teaching equipment and the demotivation among the teaching staff. Owura will support massive investment across the board in our school system Owura will support Teacher’s Unions. Owura believes that if you motivate a teacher, you motivate society.

SAFER STREETS

Owura will work with law enforcement to get guns off the streets through the buyback program. Safer streets mean safer communities and safer communities mean our

LAW ENFORCEMENT AND NEIGHBORHOOD ACQUAINTANCE PROGRAMS

The law officers are not our enemies. They are our protectors when needed. Owura will work to strengthen the relationship between law enforcement officers and residents, and to shatter the myth around officers

SMALL-SCALE BUSINESSES

As a business owner himself, Owura will look for the best interest of local businesses while seeking better/lower prices for Worcester residents. Owura will support policies that will protect local business from big companies.

YOUTH EMPOWERMENT

As a father of three teenagers, Owura has a skin in the game and will seek avenues to promote youth initiatives. Owura will support more youth programs within the various schools, more funding for after-school programs, and the promotion of musical intellect within the City.

CULTURAL PRESERVATION

Worcester, Mass is the all-American city for a reason. Owura believes that Worcester can develop and still maintain its cultural diversity. While we believe that more development is good for the Worcester economy, Owura will support any program that will preserve, protect and enhance the cultural and ancient landmarks.

DECONGESTION

With the recent increase in population comes congestion within the City. Owura believes that a well-planned city will involve spreading social facilities evenly across the City. I-290 is still a problem and effort will be made to address this with the appropriate State and Federal agencies.
